SDTR Beach Clean Up

SDTR Marine • June 1, 2022

As part of SDTR's social responsibility and environmental sustainability goals, employees and their families gathered at Changi Beach on 16 May 2022 to take part in a beach clean up and learn more about the marine ecosystem.

80% of marine litter comes from land-based sources, particularly landfills, industrial outfalls, untreated municipal sewerage, and littering of beaches and coastal areas. More than 150 million tons of plastic are estimated to have been dumped in the world’s oceans, and this figure is expected to increase exponentially over the next few years. The buoyant characteristic of plastic litter, combined with its slow biodegrading nature, leads to tremendous dispersal potential in our oceans.

Marine wildlife such as whales, turtles, seabirds, and crustaceans may consume the litter, causing harm to their health. These objects may also cause physical lacerations and entanglement. Marine plastic litter can leach chemicals used in its production and pose a serious threat to human health.

The presence of litter affects the environment adversely, including the loss of biodiversity and degradation of marine and coastal ecosystems. Through this event, SDTR hopes to instill a sustainability mindset among employees and their families, by raising awareness on the effects of littering and sharing ways to protect the environment with the hope that Ocean and Marine Life can be preserved for future generations to come.
